2026 Class Macro Trend
Third Law”

Design Statement: Fabric Styling Capstone:

Macro Trend 2026–2027

Grounded in Newton’s Third Law — that every action generates an equal and opposite reaction — this year’s Fabric Styling Capstone investigates Techné: the Greek concept of art, craft, and applied skill. The root of the word “technology,” Techné, reminds us that innovation is not separate from humanity - rather inspired by it.

Drawing from Aristotle’s philosophical framework of Techné, students will examine the virtues of nature, materiality, and human intention to create what we are calling “objects unknown” — forms that emerge not from automation, but from tactility and cultivated skill.

At the micro level, the class will interpret the pervasive dichotomies shaping contemporary life: political polarization, social fragmentation, environmental urgency, health discourse, and the relentless acceleration of digital culture.

In reaction to political fatigue, the saturation of news cycles, and the commercial overreach of AI, students identify a counter-movement. Craftsmanship becomes resistance. Heritage becomes a foundation. Intentional design becomes a priority. The artisan — and individual expression — becomes a quiet but powerful act of protest.

Unlike previous classes taught by Professor Luke, who projected 3–5 years into the future, this class responds to the extreme velocity of cultural change. Their forecasts target an 18-month horizon, acknowledging that in today’s climate, transformation happens faster, trends mature quicker, and relevance demands the ability to pivot quickly.

The focus is not nostalgia. It is recalibration - A creative “equal and opposite response” to our world today.

In teams, the BFA Fabric Styling Seniors projected a trend forecast 18 months forward. From there, they focused on the creative execution of this forecast as a fashion editorial featuring a prop imagined and created in their Visual Presentation class.

From there, they conceived, designed, and created the exhibitions you will see on exhibit on May 12 -24, in the FIT Art and Design Gallery, Pomerantz Art & Design Center - 227 W 27th

Special thanks to Professors Christene Selleck & Glen Sokoli for their support, dedication, and late nights putting this exhibition together.
